The Mighty Texas Dog Walk
Lady Bird Lake
,
Austin
,
Texas
Sporting her Red Sox bandana, Ginger successfully completed her fourth Mighty Texas Dog Walk. There were hundreds of dogs to get tangled up with, but Ginger stayed focused and uneventfully crossed the finish line. The course this year was a bit shorter, but there were more sponsers than ever. Free doggy items were everywhere including tennis balls, biscuits and even a collapsible water bowl which Dave has clipped on to his waist. No, that's not a fanny pack or man-purse. (3 pictures)

Texas Wildflowers in Bloom
Emma Long Park

Austin

Texas
January and February carried with them above normal rainfall for Central Texas. Along with increasing nearby lake levels, the rain also set the stage for a colorful wildflower season. The most anticipated wildflower is the Bluebonnet. The Bluebonnet was adopted as the offical state flower of Texas in 1901 and is also called the buffalo clover and wolf flower. Our run-in with the state flower, or scientifically, Lupinus texenis, was along the Turkey Creek Trail in northwest Austin. (7 pictures)

Backyard Visitor

From time to time we see deer roaming through our backyard. They tend to graze on a few things then move on to the neighbor's yard or head back into the Preserve area. However on this occasion we had a deer who made herself comfortable for a couple of hours. Even more impressive is that our little pocket size Canon was able to zoom in close enough to capture the shot.

Well, it could have been something worse. This grasshopper was spotted by Beth putting a little pressure on a branch of a sego palm. Not visible is the hobo stick and sack that the grasshopper was carrying over its shoulder.

Recent Rains
Turkey Creek
,
Austin

Texas
Recent rain has had a great impact on Ginger's favorite walking trail. Many of the rocks that help walkers forge the creek were submerged and the banks offered a slippery, soft mud landing. Having 4-leg-drive was a big advantage. (6 pictures)

Muddy Mutt Mayhem

Ginger had a few good runs today with a handful of other energetic dogs. Cool weather and mud seem to bring out the "play" in most pups. Ginger received her war paint from a similiar sized 2-year-old tan spotted dog who liked to jump and chase. Not visible is the heavy coating of mud on Ginger's underside and paws which she was kind enough to rinse off in a water hole on the way back to the car. (3 pictures)

Romeo, oh Romeo, where you at?

Right around dusk, Ginger alerted us to a trespasser in "her" backyard - a small Gray cat looking lost and confused. A well kept & friendly little guy, Beth was able to secure it in the garage for the evening. Hoping for a micro-chip, Beth took the cat to the Vet in the morning, but no luck. However, within an hour, a frantic owner contacted the Vet in search of a lost gray cat. Romeo, as we learned, lives 5 houses down the street. A happy ending for all but the Coyotes, who had their dinner plans foiled.

We are happy to say that "Builder's Beige" has been expunged from the master bedroom. All it took was three gallons of primer, 2.5 gallons of Silvermist, 3.5 gallons of Gateway Grey, and 4 days of working rollers and paint brushes. Next up is the downstairs front room. (5 pictures)

Neighborhood walk with Ginger
Northwest

Austin

Texas
Rainy weather has been rare in central Texas over the last 12+ months. Ginger does not like to go outside in the rain and will skip her duties to avoid damp fur. We believe her dislike toward inclement weather is because in her 4 years, she has seen rain only on a few occasions. Nonetheless, we were able to take the brat out for a walk on a less than ideal day. Poor thing. (5 pictures)

Short visit to the North End
North End
,
Boston
,
Massachusetts
With Christmas shopping complete, Dave and Beth made a quick trip into Boston's North End to check up on a few favorite landmarks. For the first time in many years, the December weather was reasonably hospitable to thin-blooded Texans. The pictures don't show it, but the foot traffic was very heavy and the famous pastry shops had long lines of customers looking to stock up for Xmas meals. We found a small bakery tucked away on Prince Street to score some pizzelles. (6 pictures)

Sunny Start to 2012
Woodlands Park
,
Austin
,
Texas
The weather for the start of 2012 has been excellent and offered an opportunity to check-up on a neighborhood park. Woodlands Park runs along Lake Austin and sits tucked away on a dead-end street with high-end homes still under construction. It also happens to be a short walk from la casa and only a slight diversion from Ginger's staple walk along the Nature Trail. (8 pictures).

Foundation Paint Project

It was time to do something about the stains on the back foundation. After scrubbing the stucco with a mixture of bleach and Jomac, a coat of exterior white primer was applied. Then masonry paint that matched the color of the house was added. Despite temperatures exceeding 100 degrees, this was an inexpensive, easy to do project with a high aesthetic return. (4 pictures).

An area in front of the house needed some sprucing up but is confined by shrubs and the foundation. The answer was to create three wood planters to position the new plants above the shrubs, but below the window. A miter saw was rented to make 126 cuts for the various sized pieces of wood. Assembly, sanding, and staining came next; Have a look at the pictures to see the progression of the project (16 pictures).
